Inside Iran
November 11-22, 2009
|
With the recent Iranian presidential election comes a major focus by policy makers,
academics and the media on future US foreign policy with this important regional
power. We offer an opportunity for members to travel to Iran to see for yourself
the country and her people. Join Dr. Carla Thorson, Vice President of Public Programs,
World Affairs Council of Northern California and Dr. Thomas Ricks, an academic who
first lived in Iran as a peace corps volunteer, on a journey where vast monuments
serve as testament to the extraordinary history of this country. Throughout the
program we will request briefings and meetings with local leaders from a variety
of backgrounds and afford “meet the people” opportunities. Begin in Tehran where
we have scheduled two full days to explore the country’s capital. Spend a morning
at the Archaeological Museum with its fine collection, including a sixth-century
relief of Darius the Great. Marvel at exquisite Persian miniatures housed in the
Reza Abbasi Museum and enter the basement vault of the Bank Milli Iran to view the
spectacular Crown Jewels. Fly to Shiraz and discover an important city in the medieval
Islamic world. Through its many artists and scholars, Shiraz has been synonymous
with learning and poetry. Close by lie the magnificent ruins of Persepolis, one
of the most remarkable archaeological sites found in the Near East. Continue to
Isfahan, a town of unsurpassed beauty where brilliant blue-tiled buildings and majestic
bridges are often recognized as the perfection of Islamic architecture. Driving
back to Tehran, stop at the village of Abyaneh whose inhabitants continue to wear
traditional ethnic dress. $4,650 plus airfare.
